AUSTRALIAN Willunga 100 McLaren Vale Shiraz Viognier 2007
Producer
Willunga 100 is in McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide.
The grapes for the Willunga wines come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, including some over 50 years old. Winemaker Tim James uses modern equipment alongside traditional winemaking techniques, including open-top fermenters, to ferment the small parcels of fruit arriving at the winery. Willunga 100 aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region.
Vineyards
Sandy soils provide lifted aromatics while the darker soils, including `Terra Rossa` types, contribute to rich, bold tannins. All the vineyards are managed to produce the highest quality possible with only the best parcels selected for Willunga 100. McLaren Vale has a warm Mediterranean climate with a strong cooling influence from the Gulf of St Vincent.
Vinification
Parcels of Shiraz were harvested in March with the Viognier component ripening slightly later (late March), to ensure it was fully ripened to ensure quality integration with the Shiraz. Viognier was co-fermented with Shiraz in open fermenters where it was plunged and pumped over at least twice per day. Only the best parcels were selected to produce an opulent, structured wine, which was then matured in French and American oak.
Tasting Notes
The 2007 is vibrant, deep ruby in colour with purple tints. On the nose it is lifted and perfumed with a touch of peachiness coming through from the Viognier and plenty of juicy, smoky bramble fruit from the Shiraz. Well structured with smooth, ripe tannins and great depth.
