Chilean Calbuco Merlot ( Case of 12)
Producer
With the Calbuco range, we set out with Alberto Antonini to produce a range of modern wines offering excellent value for money. We wanted to capture the vibrant fruit that characterises Chile’s best wines, but give them a bit more depth and structure...
We believe that Alberto has succeeded in doing this. Calbuco is a volcano in the Andes, as striking a symbol of Chile as its wine.
Vineyards
The vineyards are located in Chile`s Central Valley which is the strip of land between the Pacific and the Andes. Soils are mixed, with clay as well as the usual Chilean patchwork of loam, limestone and sand.
Vinification
After hand picking in April, the grapes were de-stemmed and partially crushed. The must was cooled and pre-fermentation maceration lasted 48 hours. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel at 25ºC. Total maceration was 15-25 days during which time the malolactic fermentation was completed.
Tasting Notes
Great depth of vibrant purple colour, with exuberant, youthful perfumes of cassis and plum from the Merlot, together with a spicy, white pepper note. On the palate it is rounded and juicy, fresh and plummy with a soft, approachable structure and spiced fruit pie finish.
