Cullen Margaret River Red(Organic, Biodynamic)
Producer
Cullen’s 28 hectares of vineyards are located in the Wilyabrup part of Margaret River... Founded in 1965 by Di and Kevin Cullen, the winemaking is now managed by their daughter Vanya. Passion and a strong sense of responsibility to the land define Vanya’s biodynamic approach to viticulture, while pioneering environmental initiatives led to Cullen becoming Australia’s first carbon neutral winery in 2007Vineyards
Margaret River Red is made from grapes grown entirely on the Cullen and Mangan vineyards. The Mangan vineyard is owned by Vanya Cullen`s brother Rick and sister-in-law (Bettina Mangan) and managed by Cullen. The soils at Cullen are old, granite and gravely sandy loam, overlaying lateric subsoils. Biodynamic viticulture is practised on all Cullen vineyards in order to maximise the flavours in the grapes by improving and sustaining their unique environment.Vintage Information
2008 was an excellent vintage in the Margaret River with good winter rainfall followed by some hailstorms in late October & early November which reduced crops considerably. The lovely summer weather allowed the grapes to ripen well and a ripe, healthy crop of small berries was picked in mid March.Vinification
All grapes were hand harvested and sorted before crushing. Fermentation was carried out in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks after which the wine was aged in French oak (up to 40% new) for 13 months before bottlingTasting Notes
Deep coloured and youthful on the rim, the Margaret River Red is chunky and intense, with scented mulberry fruit and a smoky, blackberry fruit character on the palate. Good length with plummy notes on the finish.| Vintage | 2008 |
