Le Clos Jordanne Pinot Noir `Le Grand Clos`(Case of Six)

Producer

Le Clos Jordanne is a joint venture between Boisset and Vincor Canada... When Jean-Charles Boisset started discussions about this project, he soon realised that the poor state of viticulture in most of the Niagara escarpment meant that he would have to plant his own vineyards. Given this, the gestation period for these wines has been much longer but the end results have been better than even the most optimistic expected. As with the Pinots, the Chardonnays come from organically certified vineyards

Vineyards

Le Grand Clos is produced from Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard`s best parcels in only the best years. Vertical shoot positioning/single Guyot trellising is used here with a planting density of 5,250 plants/Ha. Yields were 3.3 tonnes/Ha. All Le Clos Jordanne`s vineyards are certified organic.

Vintage Information

2007 was a drought year. On the Jordan Bench, there was nary a drop of rain from mid-July through September. The fruit was harvested under optimum conditions; the yields were tiny, and the resulting wines richly fruity, tannic, and sure to be long-lived. It was an atypical year for the region, the weather stayed dry and warm and the lovely sunshine continued through picking, fermentation and barrelling. Le Grand Clos Pinot Noir was harvested on the 23rd of September, 2007.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-sorted at the winery, de-stemmed and put into 3 metre high French oak for a 4-day cold soak at 12-13°C. Fermentation started naturally, using indigenous yeasts from the Grand Clos part of the vineyard. Pumping over took place using French Pichonneau pumps. After fermentation, the wine was left on the skins for a number of days to extract additional flavour, in this case, the cuvaison took a total of 28 days. The new wine was then racked into barrel, where it completed malolactic fermentation in spring 2008. The barrels were French oak of which 30% was new. The wine spent 19 months maturing before being racked to vat in April 2009 where it remained two months prior to bottling on May 19th 2009. The wine was then aged for a further 8 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

A bouquet of dense but elegant red and black fruit is interspersed with dried flowers, orange zest, game, plums, spice and leather all contribute, but the pure, kirsch-flavoured fruit dominates the nose. Red fruits are layered on the palate with darker berries, together with a chalky minerality, firm acidity, and plenty of finely-tuned tannins. The finish is dark-fruit and focused.
