Le Clos Jordanne Pinot Noir `Village Reserve`(Case of Six)
Producer
Le Clos Jordanne is a joint venture between Boisset and Vincor Canada...
When Jean-Charles Boisset started discussions about this project, he soon realised that the poor state of viticulture in most of the Niagara escarpment meant that he would have to plant his own vineyards. Given this, the gestation period for these wines has been much longer but the end results have been better than even the most optimistic expected. As with the Pinots, the Chardonnays come from organically certified vineyards.
Vineyards
Grapes for the Village Reserve are grown on four biodynamically farmed estate vineyards located around the town of Jordan in the Niagara Escarpment. The vines are trellised VSP and single Guyot trained. The planting density is 5,250-5,555 plants per hectare with yields of 3.9 tons per hectare.
Vintage Information
2008 was a hard year to manage in the vineyard due to alternating sun and rain patterns which caused humidity and resulted in a fairly high risk of disease. This meant extra scrutiny was applied to all vineyard practices to ensure that the vines remained free of rot. As a result, ripe grapes in good condition were picked between 23rd September and 6th October.
Vinification
Grapes were hand-sorted at the winery, de-stemmed and put into 3m high French oak for a 3-5 day cold soak at 12-13°C. The maceration phase was gentle, with no punching down in this intense and structured vintage. Once fermentation started with wild yeasts, remontage/pumping over took place using gentle French Pichonneau pumps. Post-fermentation maceration lasted a few days to extract additional flavour, finesse and complexity. The new wine was then racked into barrel to complete malolactic fermentation until spring 2008. 30% new French oak barrels were used for ageing using a mix of different oak and the wine remained in barrel for an unusually long period of nearly 19 months. The wine then aged in bottle for 8 months from April 2009 and was bottled in May 2009.
Tasting Notes
Light ruby in colour with brick red undertones. Elegant aromas of red berries, blackcurrant, cherry and mint with a touch of subtle oak. The palate stays focused on the red fruit notes such as cranberries, raspberry and rhubarb with a touch of hazelnut. Smooth in texture with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral finish.
