Masseria Pietrosa Salice Salentino Italian Wine
Producer
A masseria is a farm in Puglia, and the term pietrosa means ‘stony’ which applies to the low vigour soil on this estate...
This estate is part of the co-operative at San Marzano and the wines are made by Filippo Baccalaro. As a result, they are fresh and clearly varietal. The label shows a Puglian version of the fable, the Fox and the Grapes, where, unlike in Aesop`s version which gives rise to the expression `sour grapes`, the fox never gives up because the Puglian grapes are so good.
Vineyards
Established in 1962, the San Marzano co-op has over 1,000 members whose vineyards cover a huge area, spread over a wide variety of different terrains and microclimates.
Vintage Information
Puglia had a difficult year in 2010 with an extended cool, wet spring and a very normal summer until mid July. The third week of July saw ten torrid days, which is normal, but it seemed to have a harmful effect on all fruit and vegetables (possibly because of the unusually high water content in the soil). Unfortunately, it started to rain on 1st September and rained on and off until the end of October. The grapes that were ripe and on well drained soil gave good wines, but the quantity of this extraordinary fruit was quite small. The red grapes were picked from mid September.
Vinification
Pre-fermentation maceration took place followed by temperature controlled fermentation then gentle pressing. The wine was held in French oak barrels for four months until the final blend was made before bottling.
Tasting Notes
Dense, dark colour with a black-red core and youthful rim. Intense and concentrated on the nose, with perfumes of ripe, stoned fruit, cinnamon spice and rosemary. The full-bodied palate has a concentrated structure, ripe tannins and a ripe berry character on the finish.
