Vintage Information

A promising start to the season with useful rains and mild conditions from spring to early summer allowed for vigorous vine growth. With dry, mild conditions prevailing from January to the end of February, flavours intensified nicely in a relatively disease and pestilence free environment. Apart from a handful of very hot days around Christmas, mild to warm days were the norm during veraison with the odd typically chilly day scattered throughout the growing season. The Blackwood Cabernet was harvested just before the end of the long, dry spell when 60 mm of rain fell courtesy of cyclone Poncho on the last day of March. However this had little impact on the quality of fruit picked after the rain, as the ground was parched and most rain drained very quickly into the empty dams before it had time to soak into the ground. Fruit continued to ripen steadily but surely, picking the balance of Cabernet over the 6th and 7th April, the Cabernet Franc on the 2nd and the Merlot on the 10th April.

Vinification

Fruit was harvested when flavour-ripe and was simply crushed, fermented warm, pressed gently after an average of 10 days on skins and racked a number of times before going into barrel after malolactic fermentation was completed. 25% new oak was used, an 80/20 split of French and American oak barrels and the wine was aged for 20 months before blending, filtration and bottling which took place in May 2010.

Tasting Notes

Plummy, mulberry, blackberry notes, a pinch of tarragon and thyme, along with a whisker of vanilla derived from its time in oak. The cooler growing conditions enhanced varietal definition. Generously proportioned with smooth, finely polished tannins, balanced acidity and lively flavours that are the hallmark of the variety.
