PLANTAGENENT Omrah, Pinot Noir 2010

Producer

The Omrah range is made by John Durham at Plantagenet from fruit sourced from vineyards throughout Western Australia. The wines have nicely focused fruit with lifted perfumes and good balance and are excellent quality for the price.

Vineyards

Fruit was sourced mostly from the Rocky Horror vineyard with smaller quantities from the old Bouverie vineyard and Hayview vineyard, all from around Mount Barker. A few tonnes were also sourced from Dunhelm vineyard planted in the mild climate of Denmark on the south coast to provide some finesse. All vineyards are carefully managed to yield moderately, with shoot and leaf removal employed for good fruit exposure. All vines grow on ironstone gravel loams with very minimal irrigation.

Vintage Information

A cold, wet spring delayed budburst, then shoot growth was slowed down considerably by continuing cool to mild weather all the way through into early summer. There was a prolonged flowering period due to the cool weather which led to some uneven ripening later on as well as a some disease pressure. January and February temperatures warmed up however and, combined with dry conditions, meant that ripening was considerably hastened. All batches had marvellous natural acidity and vibrant fruit flavours. Yields were low; ranging from 3.7 to 5.2 tonnes per hectare.

Vinification

Fermented warm in a mixture of open and closed fermenters, plunged and pumped over for a maximum time of nine days on skins then pressed gently. Each batch was kept separate and racked to French oak barrels, of which 20% were new. Malolactic fermentation occurred in barrel. The blend was partially assembled in June then racked back to barrel for another seven months, with the final blend put together in January before bottling in February.

Tasting Notes

A bright ruby colour, the bouquet opens with cherry, raspberry and the distinctive spice of Pinot Noir, with subtle undertones of oak derived vanilla. Supple and smooth in the mouth with lashings of sweet fruit, finely polished tannins and balanced acidity; this finely poised backbone with vibrant fruit flavours and varietal spice notes, gives the wine great length and focus.
