The Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune, has a history of investing in quality and is determined to restore the Jaboulet wines to their former glory. Much of the old oak in the cellars was thrown out and almost 25,000 cases worth of wine was sold off in bulk as it was not good enough to go into the revamped Jaboulet blends. In addition, about 72,000 bottles were tipped down the drain. Caroline Frey now manages the estate and makes the wine, aided by Jacques Desvernois and consultant Denis Dubourdieu. The renewed emphasis on quality is to be seen in the current releases, from the modestly-priced Parallèle 45 up to the iconic Hermitage La Chapelle.
Vineyards
Fruit for this wine comes from Syrah vines grown in the 6 hectare ‘Les Jalets’ vineyard and from vines belonging to good growers that Jaboulet has a longstanding relationship with. Les Jalets is planted on a stony plain of glacial origin and produces average yields of 40-45 hl/ha. The name `Les Jalets` is the old French word for the pebbles left behind by alpine glaciers (similar to the Galets of Chateauneuf-du-Pape). The vines are 25-35 years old. The average yield achieved is between 40 and 45 hl/ha.
Vinification
The grapes were hand-picked in the beginning of October into ventilated 20kg crates and sorted by hand, destemmed and crushed on arrival at the winery. Fermentation took place at relatively high temperatures in stainless steel and was followed by maceration which lasted 3 weeks. The wine was aged in vat and in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Attractive bright ruby colour, with a violet hue. Aromas of fresh red berries, with spice and herb complexity. The palate has intense, rich flavours with the refreshing acidity of good Syrah and smooth-textured tannins to balance the juicy berry fruit.
