Pinot Noir `Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard` Twenty Mile Bench (Case of Six)

Producer

Le Clos Jordanne is a joint venture between Boisset and Vincor Canada... When Jean-Charles Boisset started discussions about this project, he soon realised that the poor state of viticulture in most of the Niagara escarpment meant that he would have to plant his own vineyards. Given this, the gestation period for these wines has been much longer but the end results have been better than even the most optimistic expected. As with the Pinots, the Chardonnays come from organically certified vineyards.

Vineyards

All Le Clos Jordanne vineyards are organic and this is made from fruit grown in the most prized vineyard, located on the "sweet spot" of the bench, consistently giving deliciously rich and decadent wines. Vertical shoot positioning/single Guyot trellising is used here with a planting density of 5,250 plants/Ha. Yields were 3.3 tonnes/Ha.

Vintage Information

2007 was a drought year with no rain from mid-July to September. Yields were tiny as a result and quality exceptional. The grapes were picked on 12 September.

Vinification

The grapes were sorted, de-stemmed and put into 3m high French oak for a 3-5-day cold soak at 12-13°C. Fermentation started naturally, using indigenous yeasts from the Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard and no punching down of the cap took place in this vintage. Pumping over was used, with French Pichonneau pumps. After fermentation, the wine was left on the skins for a number of days to extract additional flavour, in this case, the cuvaison took a total of 28 days. The new wine was then racked into barrel, where it completed malolactic fermentation in spring 2008. The barrels were French oak of which 30% was new. The wine spent 19 months in barrel before being racked to vat in April 2009 where it remained two months prior to bottling. The wine was then aged for a further 8 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Good depth of colour with an intensely perfumed nose, aromas of chocolate and cinnamon-plums blend together with mulberries, red fruit and rose petals. On the palate, it has lovely blackberry and orange zest characters and a hint of cedar and spice. Great depth, ripe, rounded tannins and a solid structure with a lifted acidity on the finish.
