Plantagenet Mount Barker Cabernet Sauvignon

Producer

The Plantagenet winery is located in the Mount Barker township, a sub-district of the Great Southern region in Western Australia... The area is famous for its premium quality, cool climate wine production, its proximity to the Southern Ocean ensuring the slow ripening of the grapes which enhances fruit composition and aromatic qualities. Plantagenet’s five vineyards are located to the south and west of the town. Winemaker John Durham joined from Cape Mentelle in 2007.

Vineyards

The fruit was sourced almost entirely from the 37 year old Wyjup and 39 year old Bouverie vineyards, 78% growing on ancient gravel loams in the Mount Barker area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The more recently planted Rocky Horror vineyard, planted on even more gravelly soils contributed 16% towards the Cabernet blend.

Vintage Information

A promising start to the season with useful rains and mild conditions from spring to early summer which allowed for vigorous vine growth. With dry, mild conditions prevailing January to end of February, flavours intensified nicely in a disease and pestilence free environment. Apart from a handful of very hot days around Christmas, mild to warm days were the norm during veraison with the odd chilly day scattered throughout the growing season. Fruit ripened steadily under the ideal conditions, resulting in flavoursome, lively wines, with well defined varietal flavours.

Vinification

Once crushed, the fruit was sent to fermenters where the grapes were left on skins for three weeks. The wine was pumped over twice daily to gain colour and tannin extraction. The wine was then pressed using a boucher press and sent to stainless steel tanks where the wine settled for three days before being transferred to French oak barrels for eighteen months.

Tasting Notes

A complex, plush yet stately wine, with all the characteristic Cabernet notes of blackberries, currants and a touch of vanilla. A punchy vibrant palate with depth and length, layers of fruit with a core of fine tannins and well judged acidity.
