Plantagenet Mount Barker Shiraz
Producer
The Plantagenet winery is located in the Mount Barker township, a sub-district of the Great Southern region in Western Australia...
The area is famous for its premium quality, cool climate wine production, its proximity to the Southern Ocean ensuring the slow ripening of the grapes which enhances fruit composition and aromatic qualities. Plantagenet’s five vineyards are located to the south and west of the town. Winemaker John Durham joined from Cape Mentelle in 2007.
Vineyards
Fruit is sourced from the Rocky Horror vineyard (50%) which was planted in the mid 90’s and the balance sourced from the 37 year old Wyjup (22%); 39 year old Bouverie (18%) and 30 year old Charleston vineyard (10%), all growing on gravel loams around the Mt Barker area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.
Vintage Information
A promising start to the season with useful rains and mild conditions from spring to early summer allowing vigorous vine growth. With dry, mild conditions prevailing January to end of February, flavours intensified nicely in a relatively disease and pestilence free environment. Apart from a handful of very hot days around Christmas, mild to warm days were the norm during veraison with typically chilly days scattered throughout the growing season. Fruit ripened steadily but surely under the ideal conditions, resulting in lively wines, with well defined varietal flavours. All the Shiraz was harvested relatively early between the 25th and 31st March, with sugars ranging between 24.4 to 25.7 brix, moderate acidity and good pHs.
Vinification
The wine undergoes a ten day ferment, with very gentle maceration during fermentation at moderately warm temperatures and gentle slow pressing. The wine‘s structure is enhanced with the use of 40% new tight grain, French oak and it is aged for 18 months before blending, filtration and bottling.
Tasting Notes
Luscious cherry and blackberry aromas greet the nose, wrapped with chocolate and vanilla. Underlying spicy, peppery and tobacco notes abound that distinguish classic cool-climate Shiraz. A sumptuous, textural palate, with layered complexity and long berry flavours coated with lingering spicy cherry flavours.
