Viña Chocalan Syrah Petit Verdot Rosé Selección 2008
Producer
The outstanding Chocalan wines are now gaining international recognition and the key to their quality is site selection. Chocalan's 80 hectares of vineyard are situated in a part of the Maipo Valley not previously planted with vines, between the Andes and the Coastal Mountain range. The proximity of the vineyards to the Pacific Ocean ensures that the heat of the warm days is mitigated by the cool breezes that are funnelled down the valley at night. This ensures a longer ripening period, and more elegant, less jammy wines as a result.
Vineyards
The proximity of the vineyards to the Pacific Ocean ensures that the heat of the warm days is mitigated by the cool breezes that are funnelled down the valley at night. This ensures a longer ripening period, and more elegant, less jammy wines. The estate vineyard is located on the hillside in the Melipilla region in the Maipo Valley. The vines are 10 years old and are planted in welldrained 100% chalky soils. No de-leafing or lateral growth removal takes place. The grapes were hand-picked in late March.
Vinification
The grapes were de-stemmed but not crushed. The fruit was transferred to tank by gravitational flow and the whole grapes underwent cold maceration for 6 hours. The juice was then inoculated with natural yeast and fermented in stainless steel tanks at 14ºC. The wine was held in stainless steel tanks, was not fined, and was filtered after tartaric stabilisation.
Tasting Notes
Bright cherry red in colour, with attractive aromas of strawberries, raspberries and candied apples. On the palate, the wine is intense and lively, with ripe redcurrant and apple fruit, refreshing acidity and a nice clean finish.
