Chardonnay `Le Clos Jordanne Vineyard` Twenty Mile Bench (Case of Six)
Producer
Le Clos Jordanne is a joint venture between Boisset and Vincor Canada...
When Jean-Charles Boisset started discussions about this project, he soon realised that the poor state of viticulture in most of the Niagara escarpment meant that he would have to plant his own vineyards. Given this, the gestation period for these wines has been much longer but the end results have been better than even the most optimistic expected. As with the Pinots, the Chardonnays come from organically certified vineyards.
Vineyards
All Le Clos Jordanne vineyards are certified organic. Low yields also ensure that the grapes achieve maximum ripeness given Ontario’s shorter growing season due to the late spring start. Each vine is cared for by hand, synthetic fertilizers are never used, nor are synthetic fungicides, pesticides or herbicides. The vines are trained using vertical shoot positioning/single Guyot. The planting density is at 5,250 plants per ha and the yield 3 tonnes/hectare. The grapes for the Le Clos Jordanne Chardonnay are grown on the vineyard of the same name and consistently give perfumed, graceful wines.
Vintage Information
2007 was a drought year with no rain from mid-July through to September. Although an atypical year for the region, the grapes were harvested in excellent condition on 22 September.
Vinification
The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and the must was naturally settled for 24 hours, drawn off the lees into barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts from the Le Clos Jordanne vineyard. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in the spring following the vintage. The wines and lees were stirred once a week during the ageing period until the end of malolactic fermentation. The wine spent 17 months in 15% new French oak barrels, from Allier and Vosges oak. It was bottled in April 2009.
Tasting Notes
Light gold in colour with perfumes of white flowers and stone fruit on the nose. On the palate it is tightly-knit and intense, with flavours of ripe pear, lemon curd and lanolin offset by a rich, racy acidity. The oak ageing is just enough to bring out the honeyed character of the grape without masking the chalky, gunsmoke, minerality which characterises top Chardonnay wines.
