Loimer `Lois` Grüner Veltliner (Case of Six)

Producer

Fred Loimer owns 60 hectares around Langenlois, in the sunny Kamptal region of Lower Austria... Fred makes a range of wines from the excellent value ‘Lois’ and ‘Lenz’ to the superb, single varietal Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. Unlike many Austrian producers who go for an overly rich and sweet style, Fred gets full ripeness in the vineyard yet ferments to dryness, managing to produce wines with lovely definition, zest and balance on the palate.

Vineyards

Situated 200-400m above sea level, the climate of the Kamp Valley is characterised by cool nights and warm days, with a long, sunny autumn. The high summer temperatures are mitigated by the River Danube and the Waldviertel (forested area). Its long growing season and the difference in temperature between night and day, gives the grapes a chance to reach full ripeness and develop fine perfumes and flavours. Soils are mixed and well drained, with Gföhl gneiss (coarse-grained, metamorphic rock containing quartz, felspar and mica) subsoil.

Vintage Information

2010 was a year of extremes. There was a long, cold winter, a fine April, followed by a cold, wet May and June with a long, delayed flowering period. The hot July days compensated for the difficult start, though it was followed by an unpredictable August and the autumn was much too cold. Despite all this, the grapes were healthy with sufficient sugar and generous acidity. The low quantity harvest, from mid October to mid November, brought intense wines with fruitiness and flavour and with character and range - just like the year itself.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested in October into small boxes. Depending on quality, they were pressed partly whole bunch or partly destemmed, in order to result in a broader array of aromas. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was matured on its fine lees and bottled in January 2011 in order to retain freshness and primary aromas.

Tasting Notes

Youthful lemon in colour with lively, crisp perfumes of fresh green apples and a touch of blackcurrant on the nose. It has a characteristic spicy quality to the palate, with a perfect balance between zesty acidity and ripe exotic fruit. The finish is fresh and aromatic.
