Loimer Kamptal Grüner Veltliner (Case of Six)
Producer
Fred Loimer owns 60 hectares around Langenlois, in the sunny Kamptal region of Lower Austria...
Fred makes a range of wines from the excellent value ‘Lois’ and ‘Lenz’ to the superb, single varietal Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. Unlike many Austrian producers who go for an overly rich and sweet style, Fred gets full ripeness in the vineyard yet ferments to dryness, managing to produce wines with lovely definition, zest and balance on the palate.
Vineyards
Situated 200-400m above sea level, the climate of the Kamp Valley is characterised by cool nights and warm days, with a long, sunny autumn. The high summer temperatures are mitigated by the River Danube and the Waldviertel (forested area). Its long growing season and the difference in temperature between night and day, gives the grapes a chance to reach full ripeness and develop fine perfumes and flavours. The grapes for this wine are grown in fine, old vineyards around Langenlois and nearby areas. 80% of the vines are grown in loess soils and the remaining 20% in weathered gneiss soil.
Vintage Information
2010 was a year of extremes. There was a long, cold winter, a fine and hope-filled April and a cold and wet May and June with a long, delayed flowering period. The hot July days compensated for the rather strenuous vegetation. August was up and down and the Autumn was much too cold. Despite all of this, the result was healthy grapes with sufficient sugar and generous acidity. The low quantity harvest, from mid October to mid November, brought intense wines with fruitiness and flavour, with character and range - just like the year itself.
Vinification
The grapes were hand picked into small containers, in mid to late October. After a short maceration lasting four to eight hours, the grapes were pressed and fined, then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at 19-21°C. The wine remained on its fine lees until bottling.
Tasting Notes
Pale lemon-yellow in colour with lovely aromas of white pepper and spice. On the palate, it is surprisingly full-bodied and ripe, with dill, fennel and mineral characters which are both spicy and savoury. Tangy acidity is one of the hallmarks of the Grüner Veltliner grape and acts as a perfect foil for its rich, ripe palate and long finish.
