Omrah Sauvignon Blanc
Producer
The Omrah range is made by John Durham at Plantagenet from fruit sourced from vineyards throughout Western Australia...
The wines have nicely focused fruit with lifted perfumes and good balance and are excellent quality for the price.
Vineyards
The fruit for this wine was sourced 50/50 from Omrah`s Mount Barker vineyard in Rosetta and from the Akehurst vineyard, in Pemberton. Both vineyards grow on gravel loam soils, are irrigated, spur pruned, vertically grown and canopy managed.
Vintage Information
A similar season to the 2008 vintage, though with marginally cooler conditions and lower yields. After a cool, wet spring and early summer, a dry February and March followed, allowing flavours to intensify in a relatively disease and pestilence free environment. Mild sunny days were the norm during veraison though there were a few typically chilly days scattered throughout the growing season. The fruit ripened steadily with the harvest of the low yielding (4.6 tonnes per hectare) Sauvignon Blanc at Rosetta on the 16th March. The Pemberton fruit was harvested between the 19th–27th March. Sugars were much lower than usual, ranging between 20.7-21.7 brix.
Vinification
Cold, quick, gentle processing is the philosophy at Omrah for Sauvignon Blanc. The clean juice was racked off the lees after four days settling and innoculated with a couple of different strains of yeast that cope with cool fermentation temperatures. 20% of the wine was barrel fermented and left on its lees for two months to enhance mouth feel and complexit,y without sacrificing fruit integrity and intensity. The wine was filtered in November and bottled in early December.
Tasting Notes
Punchy gooseberry aromas with an undercurrent of vanilla lemon curd and a waft of wet stones. A supple yet lithe palate, with a fine core of crunchy acidity running the length of the palate with loads of mouth watering, vibrant fruit flavours. A harmonious wine with a crisp clean finish and fantastically long flavours.
