Plantagenet Great Southern Riesling

Producer

The Plantagenet winery is located in the Mount Barker township, a sub-district of the Great Southern region in Western Australia... The area is famous for its premium quality, cool climate wine production, its proximity to the Southern Ocean ensuring the slow ripening of the grapes which enhances fruit composition and aromatic qualities. Plantagenet’s five vineyards are located to the south and west of the town. Winemaker John Durham joined from Cape Mentelle in 2007.

Vineyards

Fruit was mostly sourced from the 38 year old Wyjup vineyard with smaller portions from the Hayview, Lansdale and Richards vineyards, all growing around Mt Barker in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

Vintage Information

A similar season to 2008, though with marginally cooler conditions and generally lower yields. After a cool wet spring and early summer, a dry February and March followed, allowing flavours to intensify in a relatively disease and pestilence free environment. Mild sunny days were the norm during veraison though there were a few typically chilly days scattered throughout the growing season. The fruit ripened steadily in ideal weather and the Riesling was harvested between 13th and 26th March. The cool ripening conditions were perfect for highly aromatic crisp, clean juices.

Vinification

A number of batches were harvested seperately to contribute a range of characters, from mineral and citrus through to floral and spice notes to enhance complexity. Winemaking involved minimal, gentle handling to preserve fruit and vineyard qualities. The grapes were harvested cold at night with just the free run and first press juice used. The crystal clear juice was racked off lees, inoculated with neutral yeast strain, fermented cold (10-14°C) and lightly fined.

Tasting Notes

Pale, straw yellow with green tints. Aromatically intense with green apple and lemon rind aromas, accompanied by a mineral, slatey note. Firm natural acidity is balanced by the depth of fruit. Strong citrus flavours with a spicy edge and a long, crisp finish.
