SPANISH Molino Loco,Macabeo Do Yecla 2010
Producer
Molino Loco is made by the Castaño family and takes its name from the windmill (‘molino’) that sits on the edge of their vineyards from where the fruit is sourced.
In contrast to other windmills, which turn in windy conditions, this particular windmill is “loco”, the Spanish for crazy, as it turns only on calm, still days.
Vineyards
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 500m above sea level and have a north-south orientation. The soils are sandy with a lime content that gives the wines good levels of minerality. The average age of the vines is 16 years and they are planted at an average density of 2,700 vines per hectare, trellised and pruned short. Harvest took place by hand in early september with yields of 5-6 tonnes per hectare.
Vinification
Harvest was during the second week of September 2010. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 15ºC for 15 days. No malolactic fermentation or oak ageing took place. This preserved the natural fruit purity and freshness that is so typical of the Molino Loco style.
Tasting Notes
Pale yellow in colour with a crisp, fresh nose with perfumes of white peaches and ripe apples. On the palate it is lively and soft, with juicy fruit characters and a zesty finish.
